What to feed a Syrian hamster?

Hamsters, including Syrian ones, can please the owners, but only on one condition that the food is organized correctly. It makes no sense to experiment when you can learn the main points from the standard recommendations.

Nutrition rules

Properly feeding a Syrian hamster at home is not too difficult. These animals are very active in the evenings. For this reason, relatively little food should be given in the morning. But in the afternoon, in the late afternoon, more high-calorie meals are needed.

Additionally, you should check all the secret places in the cells. Hamsters hide their supplies there, but they are not able to independently control their safety. This will have to be taken care of by the owners.

When selecting a mixture of grains in the store for food, it is imperative to check the expiration date.

Often a complete set of the necessary compositions can be bought at any one pet store. However, you need to carefully check the reputation of the supermarket, so as not to buy obviously low-quality goods. Of course, you also need to study company quality certificates.

In the wild, hamsters often eat:

  • cereal grains;
  • succulent plant foods;
  • worms;
  • small insects.

List of allowed products

For adults

Given the habitation of Syrian hamsters in meadows and forest-steppes, they love grains and seeds most of all. The easiest way to provide a pet with analogues of such food is to buy ready-made mixtures. When compiling them at enterprises, specialists mix:

  • alfalfa;
  • wheat
  • corn kernels;
  • oats;
  • sunflower seeds;
  • red millet.

But mixtures may include other components. For example, walnuts, buckwheat, shelled peas, flax grains, peanuts and sesame seeds are added there.

It is important to know that you should not “lean” excessively on fatty seeds and nuts – their excess can be dangerous for a hamster. It is advisable to give fatty food as a treat – then the animal will not be at risk of obesity.

With self-preparation of a seed mixture for a pet, you can be sure of the quality of all components. It is recommended to add pumpkin, melon and watermelon seeds. Thanks to them, you can make food varied and deliver many useful substances. But all supplements should be consumed in limited quantities. In addition, it is worth refraining from unnecessary experiments and consulting with a specialist before them.

The volume of ready-made mixtures of cereal grains can be up to 0.06 kg per day. It’s important to know that grain is occasionally exchanged for white bread. Since the animal belongs to the number of rodents, dried corn grains and seeds will become a delicacy for it.

The daily diet must necessarily include apples, carrots, bell peppers. From field greens, clover leaves, plantain, and dandelions are suitable.

We must not forget about the supply of animal protein. Two or three times a week are added to food:

  • skim cheese;
  • hard boiled egg;
  • boiled chicken;
  • low fat fish.

All animal products must be thoroughly cooked to prevent fiber retention.

Plant foods can also be a valuable source of protein. Give boiled or dried peas, beans or chickpeas. The animal will be happy kefir. Feed hamsters should be in the mornings and evenings, given that the Syrian individuals often eat at night.

Monotonous food is categorically unacceptable. A variety of cereals, dried fruits can be added to the composition of dry food. Carrots and pumpkins, zucchini, cucumbers, radishes, bell peppers can be added both raw and slightly boiled. Be sure to put in the feeder:

  • pear;
  • persimmon;
  • mango;
  • beets;
  • strawberries;
  • raspberries;
  • other forest and garden berries;
  • lettuce leaves;
  • scalded leaves of young nettle.

For babies

Young Syrian individuals are distinguished by an underdeveloped, still very delicate digestive system. For this reason, the nutrition of small hamsters should be built according to a special scheme. Animals should receive food often, but in small portions. A dry grain mixture should be continuously laid in the feeder. It is important to consider that not all small hamsters love such a product.

When issuing fresh herbs and fruits, it is necessary to add no more than one type of food during the day, otherwise digestion can be harmed. For a similar reason, exotic fruits should be avoided. Sprouting at home can give good results:

  • wheat;
  • leaf lettuce;
  • peas;
  • beans.

It is useful to draw up a nutrition plan in advance and strictly follow it.

To ensure the normal development of pets, be sure to add young plant shoots – they will saturate the body with microelements. At a month and even at an earlier age, many hamsters eat human baby food. The motive is simple – it contains meat, cereal and vegetable components.

The topic of nutrition for adult hamsters is also quite relevant. This group includes all animals, starting from 2 years and older. Characteristic signs – apathy, loss of appetite. But, even without closely watching the animal, it is easy to see that his teeth are already almost worn off. For this reason, coarse food will have to be completely abandoned.

Nuts, hard grains are ground to a mushy state. It is better to grate all vegetables and fruits – it is better to do this even with a banana, tomato, dill. You can still use ready-made dry formulations – with their help it is possible to stabilize the work of digestion.

It is recommended to feed the “oldies” basically the same food as the kids.

For pregnant females

Feed in the diet of this group of individuals should deliver a maximum of trace elements. It is better if a lot of food containing protein is provided once a day. You also need fresh herbs and cereal sprouts. Complain about the lack of appetite at this time is not necessary. Moreover, the animal will worry if its feeder is empty.

It is advisable to lay a little chalk or mineral stones there. Both are sold in all pet stores. When biting into these breeds, the hamster will receive a maximum of salts and minerals, which is very important for the development of embryos, otherwise the lack of trace elements will be replenished at the expense of the main organism.

What can’t be given?

But the impressive variety of foods a Syrian hamster needs doesn’t mean it’s an omnivore. Inept or illiterate nutrition can cause significant damage to health. It is strictly forbidden to feed him:

  • fatty cottage cheese;
  • sour cream and cheese;
  • sugar (sand and refined sugar);
  • cow butter;
  • cream;
  • table salt;
  • herbs and spices;
  • chocolate
  • sweets;
  • ice cream;
  • baking (especially rich);
  • dry food intended for other animals.

Mushrooms and acorns, Brazil nuts, almonds are dangerous. The pits found in pomegranates, cherries, apricots, plums or cherries, as well as other fruits and citrus fruits, can deform the cheek pouches. Do not rely on the instincts of the animal. It willingly eats fat, red meat, oily fish. And as a result, the body will receive an excess amount of fat.

The ban includes potatoes and cabbage of any variety. The threat may be garlic and onions, sorrel leaves, needles, branches of trees and shrubs. It is undesirable to introduce any juices (vegetable, fruit or berry) into the diet.

You can not catch insects on your own to feed the hamster. You can not let him get food on the street for himself.

The only acceptable type of bread is homemade crackers. A manufactured product of this kind may contain hazardous components of synthetic origin. Preservatives, flavors, dyes and flavor enhancers are often added there. Grapes should be given only without seeds. In order not to peel the berries by hand, it is better to choose raisins.

Boiled beef liver should be used with great care. This organ absorbs all the toxic substances that have previously entered the body of a cow. And cooking is unlikely to be able to remove them sufficiently. If you give the liver, then only in limited quantities and without salt. All foods containing more than 3% fat are strictly prohibited.

By feeding a hamster white cabbage, you can even kill him. Exotic fruits should be used with caution. It is fundamentally unacceptable to use:

  • canned food;
  • stews;
  • fried food.

Diet Supplements

To sharpen teeth, you can occasionally feed your hamster hard pasta or crackers. The animal must have continuous access to clean, fresh water. Having noticed a violation of digestion, sunflower oil or boiled crushed rice is introduced into the diet. It is important to know that if such techniques do not immediately help, then you should immediately contact your veterinarian. From field and other plants it is appropriate to add:

  • knotweed;
  • burdock;
  • sleep;
  • parsley.

Tarragon, dandelion or wormwood should be used with much more care. All herbs can be collected only in ecologically clean places, that is, away from roads, factories and boiler houses, from power plants. Herbs should be thoroughly washed with running water and gently dried. For sharpening teeth, only branches from fruit plants are used.

From the pumpkin you need to take only the pulp. Of course, the use of plants grown with the addition of nitrates and pesticides is unacceptable. Root crops must be thoroughly washed. Do not give hamsters potato skins. All additives are cut into pieces that the animal can eat.
